SCOTLAND’S SPORTING HERO DAVID COULTHARD ARRIVED IN GLASGOW TO DELIVER A FULL-THROTTLE MOTORING EXPERIENCE TO HOME CROWD

The Dumfriesshire motor star showcased his skills to motor enthusiasts, undertaking power laps on Glasgow’s first ever street circuit in the iconic Red Bull Racing RB7 on roads snaking between the SECC and the nearby SSE Hydro Arena. 

He said: “With my Formula One presenting schedule, I don’t get back to Scotland much so it’s fantastic to be here at IGNITION. It’s been great to have the chance to show off the RB7 a little bit to a home crowd. We had great fun and hopefully gave everyone an opportunity to hear that roar of a V8 Formula One engine.” 

Event Director Jeremy Vaughan, commented: “What an incredible start to IGNITION. We’re overwhelmed by the turnout from the Scottish fans. It’s an honour to have Scotland’s own Formula One legend David at our event. He is certainly the man of the hour and has some very loyal fans excited to see him here on his home soil. Hopefully this won’t be the last Scotland will see of IGNITION.” 

Mark Webber, the 2015 World Endurance Champion and winner of nine Formula One Grands Prix, took to the specially constructed street circuit and was guest of honour at the show’s VIP opening evening where he told tales of his Formula One experience and participated in a lively Q&A session with the audience. 

One of the major names in Scottish motor sport – five times British Rally champion Jimmy McRae –inaugurated the specially constructed IGNITION Street Circuit, driving late son Colin McRae’s famous Subaru Impreza world championship winning rally car which is on display throughout the festival. Thrills were also being injected across the weekend from former Boyzone member Shane Lynch with Team Japspeed, demonstrating spectacular sideways motor sport discipline of drifting. 

Further highlights included power laps by tame racing driver The Stig, beautiful displays of classic cars and memorabilia plus homages paid to some of the world’s finest motor sporting heroes.  The Top Gear Live Stunt Team, led by Paul Swift were also be in action, taking over the live action zones with an impressive display of precision driving.
