Isle of Skye Half Marathon says thank you to vital volunteers

With this year’s half marathon taking place on Saturday 10 June, 741 runners completed the 13.1 mile race, making it the biggest turnout in the event’s 33-year history.

Community groups were rewarded for their efforts in ensuring the smooth running of this year’s half marathon at the Portree Hotel. Cheques totalling £2,400 were distributed and Ewen Maclean, Senior Marine Sites Manager at SSC, was on hand to congratulate representatives from each organisation and help Alistair Danter, the Chair of Skye Events, to present the donations.

Organisations who received donations cheques for their volunteering efforts include the Isle of Skye Pipe Band, the local Brownies, Guides, Beavers and Cubs branches, Skye Rotary Club, DAES dance group, Skye Dance, Skye Gymnastic Group, Skye Camanachd (shinty), Skye & Lochalsh Football Association and Skye Strings Band.

Craig Anderson, Chief Executive of The Scottish Salmon Company said: ““A big thank you to everyone who gave their time and played such an important part in this year’s event. The pride, passion and dedication all the volunteers have is amazing to see and they deserve huge congratulations for their hard work. We are very proud to sponsor the Isle of Skye Half Marathon.”

Mark Crowe, Race Director of the Isle of Skye Half Marathon, said: “The work of volunteers is absolutely critical to the success of each year’s race. The selflessness, passion and dedication shown by our local helpers is very much appreciated and these donations are a fitting reward for their hard work.”

Each year, the Isle of Skye’s challenging half marathon course treats the runners to some of the islands breath taking scenery, with views of Ben Tianavaig, The Old Man of Storr, Isle of Raasay and the stunning Cuillin mountain range. Runners come from around the world to compete with entrants flying in from across Europe, America, Canada, and as far away as Taiwan and Australia.
