Western Isles police volunteers ready to help whatever the weather thanks to The Scottish Salmon Company
The PSYV Western Isles group was nominated by Morag Ross, Health and Safety Assistant at SSC’s Marybank processing facility in Stornoway, in order to help raise funds to provide a set of waterproof trousers for each volunteer ensuring they are fully kitted out to support their community come rain or shine. The group of 21 youngsters is on hand to provide support at local events such as assisting the elderly attending the Remembrance Day parade and marshalling at half marathon and 10k road races throughout the year.
Part of SSC’s Community Charter, the Fund was established in 2017, whereby SSC staff are encouraged to be champions in their communities by nominating local groups, charities and organisations that support health and wellbeing for a funding grant of up to £250.
Craig Anderson, Chief Executive at The Scottish Salmon Company, said: “We are proud to support the communities where our staff live and work. The Police Scotland Youth Volunteers provide a valuable community service all year round. As we know the Western Isles weather is notoriously unpredictable so it is important to make sure they are properly equipped.”
PC Rick Henderson, PSYV Western Isles Group Coordinator, said: “The group of Western Isles volunteers works incredibly hard throughout the year to ensure our local events run smoothly and safely. It’s great to be able to buy this new kit so they can stay dry when supporting the community on the dreich days.
"At one of the half marathons last year, it rained so heavily for the whole race that both the Youth Volunteers and I were soaked through, yet to their credit the Youth Volunteers kept smiling and cheering on all the runners. These waterproofs will be great assets to the group, and I would like to thank The Scottish Salmon Company for their generous support."
