Pencaitland Youth Football Club runs the tournament each June in place of a local gala, where clubs from across the county are invited to come and play. The funds from The Scottish Salmon Company were used to buy trophies for each player participating in the tournament to keep as a memento.

The Club, nominated by Chris Forbes, Financial Controller at SSC, is made up of 80 local children, between the ages of five and 11, with weekly coaching taken by a team of dedicated adult volunteer coaches. There are regular matches played against other local clubs in the area also, and all funds that are raised are put back into the running of the club for its members.

Part of SSC’s Community Charter, the Fund was established in 2017, whereby SSC staff are encouraged to be champions in their communities by nominating local groups, charities and organisations that support health and wellbeing for a funding grant of up to £250.

The work of the volunteers and coaches is vital in helping young players develop their skills, confidence and fitness.

Chris Forbes, volunteer coach for the club, said: “The support from The Scottish Salmon Company is invaluable. We charge a small fee for participation in the club, but this goes back into the club - to cover their kit and to cover training and match expenses.

“We want the club to operate for the benefit of the local community kids, and provide a safe environment to enjoy playing football. The Community Fund is a fantastic initiative, and the generous contribution to our annual tournament is greatly appreciated by our volunteers, and the players of course!”
